I'm sure that the average Russian soldier has been told that he is superior to the troops of the West and that his equipment is far better. Plus, the fact the Ukrainians are fighting in their own backyard.Ĭompare that to what they are seeing in Ukraine. Looks like the training, weapons, etc., paid off. They left IIRC sometime before Putin's current invasion. CIA/Spec Ops were clandestinely training the Ukraine forces. Yes, a war crime …Ī recent report says that since about 2015 after Putin's 2014 invasion taking Crimea, etc. And at this point they are just using missiles, FA & airpower to depopulate urban areas. They could not perform anything really resembling modern combined arms warfare. These type units generally don't fare well in actual combat. IMO because they are poorly trained, motivated, supported and lead. However, I believe many reports from the Ukraine say the Russian units have taken heavy losses. I think he was saying that didn't happen: Yes that did not happen to US units in either Iraq or A'stan. Which is what I thought Red Jacket meant. I was referring to US units on a large scale being decimated in Iraq or Afghanistan. I wonder if the Russian conscript soldier expected the Iraq/Afghanistan experience and ended-up with something very – very different. Granted, propaganda is all over the place, however, the Russian/Ukraine fighting looks no better than the Syrian civil war or the war against the Islamic State-nothing like the West's experience. Compare that to what we see coming out of Ukraine. It appeared from the outside as very businesslike and surgical. Watching the war on the internet gave the impression that "our" troops could handle anything thrown at them and if they got into trouble, they called in an air strike or artillery support. I do not mean to belittle their sacrifice. I know that the West's losses were horrendous for those who had to live the war or their loved ones.

My intent was to compare the losses that are being reported on the part of the Russians, which I believe are greater than expected, with the relatively "small" losses suffered by Western militaries in Iraq and Afghanistan.
